Gamma Knife Radiosurgery

Burke H. Dial, MDBurke Hood Dial, MD — Dr. Dial specializes in Gamma Knife and General Neurosurgery. He joined the Department of Surgery in 2005. Prior to his appointment with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, he was in private practice in Columbia, South Carolina for over 20 years. After a long association as a partner with Columbia Neurosurgical Associates, he joined with two other physicians to form Palmetto Neurosurgery and Spine. The same year Dr. Dial became Co-Director of the Gamma Knife Center of the Carolinas, Columbia, South Carolina, a center for treatment of difficult or inoperable brain tumors, arterio-venous malformations and trigeminal neuralgia.

Pediatric Neurosurgery

Lenwood P. Smith, Jr., M.D., FACS Lenwood Perkins Smith, Jr., MD — Dr. Smith is the only fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeon in the greater Columbia area. He offers expertise in childhood brain tumors and complex development disorders. He joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2005 in a full-time capacity. He has been a member of the Department of Surgery’s volunteer faculty since 1991 assisting in the education of students and residents. He joined the Department of Surgery to lead in building a comprehensive Neurosciences Center for the School of Medicine.
